An excellent task day with 26 volunteers helping and welcome to Paul, who joined us for the first time today. We worked on the scrub clearance area and had 6 brushcutters in use, lots of people raking off the vegetation and used 2 existing burn sites. One of the reasons the scrub is cleared is to help chalk grassland plants thrive. They need poor unimproved soil so all cuttings must be removed (if they were left in place nutrients would be added to the soil). The scrub clearance area is also a haven for birds, butterflies (our first Brimstone of the year was spotted today) and other wildlife.
